Whole Home Water Filtration in York, Simcoe & Durham

A pitcher treats the water in the pitcher. A whole home system treats every tap, every shower, the washing machine and the ice maker, because it sits where water enters the house.

Overview

Filtration at the point of entry, not just at one tap

Whole home filtration goes on the main line just after the meter or the well pressure tank. What goes into it depends entirely on what is in your water. Municipal supply across York Region arrives chlorinated and hard, so the usual answer is a sediment pre-filter followed by a carbon stage that strips chlorine along with the taste and odour it carries. If your supply uses chloramine, the carbon has to be catalytic, which our chloramine removal page explains.

Well supply is a different design. Iron, sulphur or bacteria often need their own stage before a carbon filter makes any sense, and putting carbon first on iron-bearing water just fouls the carbon. That is why a well gets tested before we specify anything.

We size the system to your household's flow, so shower pressure does not drop when the dishwasher runs, and we fit a bypass so the house stays in water during cartridge changes.

  • Chlorine or chloramine confirmed at your tap before anything is specified; wells tested first
  • Sediment pre-filtration for sand, silt and rust
  • Carbon filtration for chlorine, chloramine, taste and odour
  • Backwashing carbon tanks for larger households, no cartridges to change
  • Combined softener and filtration systems sharing one bypass and drain
  • Cartridge changes, scheduled servicing and repairs on any brand

Local Conditions

What needs filtering in York, Simcoe and Durham

Homes in Keswick and Sutton draw municipal water from Lake Simcoe, where seasonal taste and odour plus fine sediment are the usual complaints, so sediment and carbon at the point of entry is a common request there, often alongside a softener. The same Lake Simcoe supply serves Sutton and Jackson's Point in Georgina.

Newmarket, Aurora, Holland Landing and the newer streets in Sharon and Queensville are on hard York Region municipal water. There the carbon stage is for chlorine, and hardness is often the bigger issue, so filtration is planned together with a softener on the same main line. Private wells need well water treatment first.

Installation

Where a whole home water filter goes in your home

The system goes on the main line just after the water meter and main shut-off, or after the pressure tank on a well, ahead of the softener and the water heater. A sediment stage is usually a cartridge in a clear housing, so you can see the grit it has caught. A carbon stage is either a cartridge or, for a busier house, a backwashing tank that needs a drain and an outlet nearby. A bypass valve goes around the whole assembly so the taps keep running while a cartridge is swapped.

Pricing

What affects the cost of whole home water filtration

  • Cartridge housings or a backwashing tank, set by how much water the house uses at once
  • The flow rate you need, which sets housing and pipe size
  • How many stages your water test calls for
  • Whether a softener is installed alongside, sharing the bypass and drain
  • Whether the spot on the main line already has a drain and outlet within reach
  • Ongoing cartridge costs, shown up front so the cheaper system today is not the dearer one over its life

Job: water treatment, nothing else
On town water the numbers are published, so we start there and size to them. On a well, test first. Either way the right system usually turns out simpler and smaller than people expect.

Common Questions

Whole Home Filtration Questions, Answered

What homeowners ask before booking.

What is the difference between a water softener and a water filter? +
A softener removes hardness minerals, calcium and magnesium, by ion exchange. It does very little for chlorine, sediment, taste or odour. A filtration system targets those instead. Many homes end up with both on the main line, in an order set by what the water needs.
Do I need whole home filtration on municipal water? +
Municipal water is treated and safe, but it arrives chlorinated, and chlorine is what most people taste and smell. Whole home carbon filtration removes it before any tap, including the shower. Whether that is worth doing is a comfort decision rather than a safety one, and we will tell you so.
Will a filtration system reduce my water pressure? +
Not if it is sized correctly. Pressure loss happens when a system rated for a smaller household supplies a larger one, or when cartridges are left in past their service life. We size to your fixture count and flow, and a clogged filter is the first thing we check on any pressure complaint.
How often do the filters need changing? +
It depends on the stage and your water. Sediment pre-filters on silty or well water may need changing several times a year, while a carbon stage on municipal supply often runs six to twelve months. We set the interval from your test results rather than the number printed on the box.
