Salt-Free Water Conditioners in York, Simcoe & Durham
A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness. It changes how hardness behaves so it does not stick to surfaces as scale. For some homes that is exactly enough. For others it is a disappointment. We tell you which before you buy.
What a conditioner does, and what it does not
Template-assisted crystallization media converts dissolved calcium and magnesium into microscopic crystals that stay suspended in the water and pass through rather than plating onto pipes, heating elements and fixtures. There is no salt, no brine, no drain and no power. The hardness minerals are still in the water; they simply behave better.
That makes a conditioner a good fit where the concern is scale in the water heater, tankless unit or boiler, where softened water is not wanted, or where a drain and outlet are not available. It is a poor fit where the goal is soft water for washing, spotless glassware or the slippery feel of a softener, because it does not deliver those.
Conditioners are also sensitive to iron, manganese and oil, which foul the media, so on a well they usually need iron treatment ahead of them, and the well needs testing first. On town water your hardness is already published, and we give you a straight comparison against a softener.
- Template-assisted crystallization conditioners, no salt or electricity
- Scale protection for tankless water heaters and boilers
- Honest comparison against a conventional softener for your water
- Sediment and carbon pre-filtration where needed
- Iron treatment ahead of the conditioner on wells
- Media replacement on schedule

Where conditioners make sense, and where they do not
On the low end of hard, a conditioner is often enough to protect a tankless heater and keep scale off fixtures. Richmond Hill averages 127 mg/L, about 7.4 grains per gallon, in York Region's 2026 Q2 results, and Whitby is 125 mg/L, about 7.3 grains, per the Region of Durham. Plenty of condo and townhouse owners cannot run a drain for a softener anyway. Keswick at 150 mg/L and Georgina at 144 mg/L are hard too. A conditioner protects the heater there, but if you want spot-free glass, you want a softener.
On very hard water, like Stouffville at 318 mg/L, Mount Albert at 317 or Port Perry at 274, and on hard wells, a conditioner alone usually leaves people wishing they had a softener. We say so. Wells around Pefferlaw and Udora get tested first.
Where a salt-free water conditioner goes in your home
A conditioner is a single tank on the main line with a sediment filter ahead of it, no drain, no outlet and no salt. It is about the simplest treatment stage to fit and takes a couple of hours. The media is replaced every few years. Because there is no regeneration, there is nothing to program and nothing to top up.
What affects the cost of salt-free water conditioners
- Tank size, set by your peak flow
- Sediment and carbon pre-filtration on a well, if the well test calls for it
- Iron treatment ahead of it on wells
- Media replacement interval and cost, shown up front
- A side-by-side price against a softener so you can decide
We quote a fixed written price from your town's hardness and your household, before anything is installed.
A conditioner is not a softener without the salt. It is a different tool for a different problem. Sold honestly, it is a great one.
