Water Softener Installation: Your Water Is Hard. We Fix It.
Crust on the taps. Spots on the glasses. A kettle that rattles. You know the water is hard. We install a Canadian-made softener, sized to your town's hardness and your household, and show you the before and after.
You do not need a test to know your water is hard
York Region says it plainly on its own drinking water quality page: the water in York Region is usually hard or very hard. Durham and the Simcoe County towns publish their numbers too. Every one of our town pages shows your town's figure and links the report it came from. The question is not whether your water is hard. It is how hard, and what size softener fixes it.
Sizing comes down to four things. The grains of hardness in your water. The people in the house. The bathrooms. And iron, because iron fouls softener resin and needs its own filter ahead of the softener if there is much of it. We install metered, demand-initiated softeners that regenerate on the water you actually use, not on a timer, so you are not burning salt and water on days nobody showered.
There are honest exceptions. Innisfil's Churchill system is soft, at 53.7 mg/L, about 3.1 grains per gallon, in the InnServices annual reports. Barrie's lake-fed zones average 3 to 8 grains, much softer than its well zones at 13 to 20, per the City of Barrie. If that is you, we say so, and you keep your money.
- Sized from your town's published hardness, your household and your bathrooms
- Hardness read at your tap before install: the baseline
- Metered, demand-initiated softeners that regenerate only when needed
- Bypass valve, drain connection and brine line installed to code
- Programmed from your reading, not factory defaults
- Hardness read again after install, so you see the difference
- On a well: in-depth well water testing first

How hard is the water where you live?
The Lake Simcoe towns are hard. Keswick averages 150 mg/L, about 8.8 grains per gallon, and Georgina 144 mg/L, about 8.4 grains, in York Region's 2026 Q2 results. Beaverton is 148 mg/L, about 8.7 grains, per the Region of Durham. Innisfil's lakeshore system is 126 mg/L, about 7.4 grains, per InnServices. A standard softener, sized to the house, handles all of them.
The groundwater towns are another league. York Region reports Stouffville at 318 mg/L, about 18.6 grains, Mount Albert at 317 mg/L, about 18.5 grains, and Nobleton near King City at 264 mg/L, about 15.4 grains. Durham reports Sunderland in Brock at 345 mg/L, about 20.2 grains, Port Perry at 274 mg/L, about 16.0 grains, and Uxbridge at 186 mg/L, about 10.9 grains. That is very hard water. It needs more resin capacity and a controller set for it.
The Lake Ontario and blended supplies are hard at the low end. Newmarket is 141 mg/L, about 8.2 grains, Aurora 130 mg/L, about 7.6 grains, and Richmond Hill 127 mg/L, about 7.4 grains, per York Region, with Whitby at 125 mg/L, about 7.3 grains, per Durham. In between sit Holland Landing at 168 mg/L and Queensville in East Gwillimbury at 160 mg/L. On the low end the softener is smaller and uses less salt. We size it that way and tell you so.
Before and after. That is the proof.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right. Where it goes: on the main line after the sediment filter and before the water heater, with a bypass valve, a drain and an outlet within reach, and the brine tank beside it. If you want, we run a hard-water line to the outside taps so you are not softening the garden.
What affects the cost of water softener installation
- Capacity in grains, set by your hardness and household size
- Single tank or twin-tank system for homes that cannot have hard water during regeneration
- Whether an iron filter is needed ahead of the softener
- Drain and outlet availability where the main comes in
- A hard-water bypass line to outdoor taps, if wanted
- Salt and water use over the life of the unit, which we show you up front
