Water Softeners in Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham
Alliston's water is a blend of local wells and Georgian Bay water piped in from Collingwood. Hardness depends on which well or reservoir feeds your street. Most of it is hard. Some of it is very hard.
How hard is Alliston water? The official numbers
The unified New Tecumseth Drinking Water System runs 11 groundwater wells (7 in Alliston, 4 in Tottenham), supplemented by Georgian Bay water treated at Collingwood's Raymond A. Barker Ultrafiltration Plant and piped about 57 km to the Parsons Road Reservoir in Alliston. Beeton is fed through Alliston. Tottenham now runs mainly on Collingwood water through the Tottenham Transmission Main, with local wells supplementary.

Ratings use Health Canada's hardness scale. Grains are US grains (mg/L divided by 17.1). One sampling day. Hardness depends on which well or reservoir is feeding your street. Mill Street Reservoir serves the Tottenham side.

Book well water testingAlliston water: blended, and mostly hard
New Tecumseth publishes a monthly water quality table, and it tells the story. In the December 2025 issue, sampled on October 15, 2025, the blended water at the Parsons Reservoir was 136 mg/L, about 8.0 grains per gallon. The Alliston wells ranged from 149 at Well 1 to 237 at Well 7, about 13.9 grains. The lowest point sampled was Dugdale Avenue at 98.4, about 5.8 grains, which is moderately hard.
That spread is the honest picture. Your water is a mix of local groundwater and Georgian Bay water from Collingwood, and the mix changes with which wells are running. On any given day, most of it is hard and some of it is very hard. You already know which kind you have when you clean the shower glass.
One sampling day is one sampling day, so we do not pretend to know your street's number from a table. We size a water softener for the hard end, read your hardness at the kitchen tap before install to set the baseline, program from it, and read it again after. You see both numbers.
- Softeners sized for New Tecumseth's blended supply
- Iron-capable setup where the wells carry iron
- Baseline reading at your tap sets the program
- After reading proves it

What we see most in Alliston homes
What hard water and the local supply do to homes here.
- Hard to very hard water, depending on which well feeds you
- Iron at Wells 4 and 6, and what it does to a softener

Neighbourhoods we cover in Alliston: Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham, the streets around the Parsons Road, Beeton Springs and McKelvey reservoirs, and the rural roads of New Tecumseth.
Wells, Georgian Bay water and the blend
The Town of New Tecumseth stores water in reservoirs including Parsons (4,500 m3), Beeton Springs (1,360 m3) and McKelvey (1,600 m3), and moves it between Alliston, Beeton and Tottenham. The Hillcrest system was out of service in 2025. Tottenham now runs mainly on Collingwood water through the Tottenham Transmission Main, with its own wells as backup. Beeton gets its water through Alliston.
What that means for you: the number at your tap sits somewhere in the October 2025 range, and it can shift. A softener handles that. We size it for your household and the harder end of the range, give you a fixed written price, and set it from the baseline reading we take at your tap on install day. Then we read the same tap again so you see the after number too.
- Sized for the blend, not one sample
- Programmed from your own baseline
- Before and after at the same tap
Iron in the same table
The same December 2025 report lists iron at Well 6 at 544 micrograms per litre (0.544 mg/L) and Well 4 at 448 (0.448 mg/L). Those are also two of the very hard wells, at 206 and 202 mg/L. Iron in the feed can foul softener resin over time, so in Alliston we set up a softener that is built to handle iron as well as hardness.
If you are seeing orange or brown stains in sinks and toilets, tell us on the form. Town water with occasional iron is a softener job. A private well with heavy iron needs an iron and sulphur filter ahead of the softener, and that starts with a proper test.
- Iron-capable softener setup
- Tell us about orange or brown stains
- Separate iron filters for heavy-iron wells
Rural New Tecumseth: test the well first
Outside the serviced areas, homes rely on private wells, and town water tables do not apply. The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit tests private wells for bacteria. That is the start, not the whole picture.
Book in-depth well water testing. We check hardness, iron, manganese, pH and sulphur on site, send bacteria, nitrate, sodium and metals to an Ontario laboratory, and explain it all in plain language. Then we treat in order: sediment, iron and sulphur, softener, UV. Details are on our well water treatment page.

Before and after. That is the proof.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.
