Water Softeners and Well Testing in Mount Albert
Your water is hard. You already know it. Mount Albert's town wells are some of the hardest in York Region, and the farms around the village are on private wells. We fix the first and test the second.
How hard is Mount Albert water? The official numbers
Mount Albert's municipal system is groundwater only, run by the Town of East Gwillimbury. The countryside around the village is on private wells, and the Town's 2024 Water and Wastewater Master Plan says those areas are not planned for municipal servicing.
| Water system | mg/L as CaCO3 | Grains per gallon | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mount Albert (groundwater) | 317 | 18.5 | Very hard |
Source: York Region, Drinking Water Quality and Monitoring (2026 Q2 quarterly average). Also see Town of East Gwillimbury drinking water systems and 2024 Water and Wastewater Master Plan. Grains are US grains (mg/L divided by 17.1). Ratings follow Health Canada's hardness scale: over 180 mg/L is very hard.

Your number is above. Tell us your household and bathrooms and we quote the softener. We read your hardness before and after install so you see the difference. Here is how we install softeners.

On a well outside the village? Hardness is the least of it. Start with well water testing: bacteria, nitrates, iron and sulphur, then treatment in the right order.
Book well water testingMount Albert water: very hard, and the numbers say so
Mount Albert does not need a water test to know it has hard water. York Region publishes the number. In the 2026 Q2 quarterly averages, Mount Albert's groundwater came in at 317 mg/L, about 18.5 grains per gallon. Only Stouffville, at 318, was higher in the whole table. On Health Canada's scale, anything over 180 is very hard. Mount Albert is well past it.
You see it every day. White crust around the taps. A film on the shower glass that comes back two days after you clean it. A kettle that rattles. Towels that dry stiff. That is not dirty water. The water is safe. It is a scale problem, and scale is what kills water heaters and dishwashers early.
So we do not come out to discover your hardness. We already know it. We put in a water softener sized for 317 mg/L and your household, read the hardness at your kitchen tap before we connect anything, and read it again after. You see both numbers.
- Softeners sized for 317 mg/L, about 18.5 grains per gallon
- A softener set up to handle the iron in the supply
- Baseline hardness reading before we connect anything
- After reading at the same tap, so you see both numbers
- In-depth well water testing for the farms and rural roads
- Canadian-made systems, built in Barrie

Very hard water. A softener ends it.
At 317 mg/L, a softener in Mount Albert is not a nice extra. It is the fix. Water that hard leaves scale inside the tank water heater, coats the heat exchanger in a tankless unit, and clogs dishwasher spray arms and shower heads. The same York Region table lists iron in Mount Albert's supply at 0.245 mg/L, so we set the softener up to handle iron as well as hardness. Our softener installation page walks through the sizing.
Here is how it goes. You tell us your town, water source, people in the house and bathrooms. We give you a fixed written price. On install day we read your hardness at the kitchen tap before we connect anything. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that reading, not factory defaults, then read the same tap again. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.
- Softener sized for 317 mg/L and your household
- Programmed from your own reading
- Before and after hardness at the kitchen tap
Well water testing around Mount Albert
Outside the village, homes are on private wells, and a well is a different job. Hardness is only part of it. Wells in this area can carry iron that stains fixtures orange, a rotten-egg sulphur smell, and bacteria after a wet spring. York Region lets well owners send a bacteria sample through Public Health Ontario bottles, but that checks bacteria only. York Region says those labs no longer test for nitrates or sodium, so those go to a private lab.
That is why well owners start with in-depth well water testing, not a softener quote. We check hardness, iron, manganese, pH and sulphur on site, send the rest to an Ontario laboratory, explain every number in plain language, then treat only what is there: sediment, iron and sulphur, softener, and UV if bacteria shows up. The full design is on our well water treatment page.
- Bacteria, nitrates, iron and sulphur tested
- Plain-language results
- Treatment in order: sediment, iron and sulphur, softener, UV
Before and after. That is the proof.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.
