Water Softeners in Whitby and Brooklin
Whitby drinks Lake Ontario. It is hard, at the low end of hard. Not very hard. So we size the softener small and tell you so.
How hard is Whitby water? The official numbers
Whitby and Brooklin get Lake Ontario water from the Whitby water supply plant, part of Durham Region's shared lakeshore system.
| Water system | mg/L as CaCO3 | Grains per gallon | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lakeshore system (Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Brooklin, Oshawa, Bowmanville, Newcastle) | 125 | 7.3 | Hard |
Source: Region of Durham, About Water (no year stated on the page). Grains are US grains (mg/L divided by 17.1). 125 mg/L is just over the 120 moderately hard line on Health Canada's scale. Hard, never very hard.

Whitby is not Uxbridge or Port Perry. It drinks Lake Ontario, treated at the Whitby water supply plant and shared across Durham's lakeshore system. Durham Region lists the lakeshore system at 125 mg/L, about 7.3 grains per gallon. On Health Canada's scale, 121 to 180 is hard. So Whitby is hard, just over the moderately hard line. Not very hard, and we will not tell you it is.
Durham says its water is safe and that a softener is a personal preference. We agree. Whitby tap water is safe, and at 125 mg/L plenty of people live without a softener and are fine.
Here is the honest case for one anyway. Lake water at 125 still leaves spots on glasses and shower doors, a film in the kettle, and scale in a tankless water heater over time. If those bug you, a small, right-sized water softener fixes them. Small is the point. You do not need a big unit at 7.3 grains.

The right size for the low end of hard
Most softener sales go wrong in towns like Whitby by overselling. At 7.3 grains per gallon, hardness barely drives the size. Your household and bathrooms do. A smaller softener regenerates less often, uses less salt and less water, and fits in a tight utility room. That is the one we quote, in writing, at a fixed price.
On install day we read your hardness at the kitchen tap before we connect anything. That is your baseline. We program from that reading and read the same tap again after. You see both numbers. For a townhouse with no drain nearby, a salt-free conditioner can protect a tankless heater from scale. It does not soften, and we will tell you that up front. If chlorine taste bothers you more than spots, a carbon filter is the better buy.
- Smaller softener, sized by household
- Salt-free option where there is no drain
- Carbon filtration if chlorine is the real complaint
North of Brooklin: a well is a different job
Some homes in the north Whitby countryside may be on private wells, and the lakeshore number does not apply to them. Well water can be harder, and it can carry bacteria, nitrates, iron or sulphur. The Region's Health Department tests private wells for bacteria. It does not cover the rest.
If that is you, start with in-depth well water testing. We test on site and through an Ontario laboratory, explain the results in plain language, then treat in order: sediment, iron and sulphur, softener, UV. Our well water treatment page shows the full design.
- Full well panel, not just bacteria
- Plain-language results
- Only the stages your well needs
Before and after. That is the proof.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.
