Know your number Keswick tap water: 150 mg/L, about 8.8 grains per gallon. York Region calls that hard. York Region, 2026 Q2 average Look up your town

Before and after. That is the proof.

We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.

What's actually in your water

What is in your water, and how each stage treats it

Tap, well or lake, water picks things up on the way to your glass. Some you can taste or see. Most you cannot. Scroll to follow one stream from your supply to your kitchen tap.

Stage 1 of 6 Stage 1 · Sediment

Catch the grit first

A sediment filter takes out sand, silt and rust before they clog every stage after it. Clear housings let you see what it has caught.

SedimentRust
Stage 2 of 6 Stage 2 · Iron & sulphur

Stop the staining and the smell

Orange stains and a rotten-egg odour come from dissolved iron and hydrogen sulphide, common on private wells across York, Simcoe and Durham. An oxidizing filter turns them into particles it can trap.

IronSulphur
Stage 3 of 6 Stage 3 · Carbon

Take out chlorine and chemicals

Activated carbon strips chlorine and chloramine, pesticides, and the taste and odour they carry. Your shower steam is cleaner too.

Stage 4 of 6 Stage 4 · Softener

End the scale

Calcium and magnesium make most tap water around here hard. A softener sized to your household swaps them out by ion exchange, so kettles, water heaters and shower glass stop crusting over.

Stage 5 of 6 Stage 5 · UV

Disinfect without chemicals

Ultraviolet light inactivates bacteria and viruses as the water passes through. Standard on wells and lake intakes, with no chlorine added.

Stage 6 of 6 Stage 6 · Reverse osmosis

The last line at the kitchen tap

A reverse osmosis membrane rejects what the other stages cannot: PFAS, lead, nitrates, pharmaceutical residue and microplastics, at the one tap you drink from.

We test. We tell. You decide.

Not every home needs every stage. Hard water you already know about, and a softener ends it. We read your hardness before we install and again after, so you see the difference. On a well, we test the whole thing before we sell you anything. That is the honest part.

Hard water and softener questions

Do I really need a water softener? +
If your tap leaves white crust, spots on glass and scale in the kettle, your water is hard and a softener fixes it. Most municipal supplies in our area are hard or very hard; check your town on our service area pages. If yours is soft, like Innisfil's Churchill system, we will tell you not to buy one.
Do you test the water before installing? +
Yes, but not to sell you something. We read your hardness at the tap before we install, set the softener from that reading, then read it again after. You see both numbers. That is how you know it works and how we know it is set up right.
I am on a well. Can I just get a softener? +
Not without testing first. Wells can carry iron, sulphur, bacteria and nitrates that a softener does not fix, and iron can foul a softener. Book in-depth well water testing and we treat what is actually there.
Is hard water unsafe to drink? +
No. Municipal water in York, Simcoe and Durham is treated and tested, and hardness is not a health issue. It is a scale issue: kettles, fixtures, dishwashers and water heaters.
Whose equipment do you install? +
Honest Water systems, manufactured for us in Barrie, Ontario. Softeners, iron and sulphur filters, whole home filtration and reverse osmosis, with manufacturer warranties up to 20 years on the top series. See the product pages for each system.
Do you do plumbing repairs too? +
No. Honest Water does water testing, filtration and treatment only. If your problem is a drain, a water heater or a leak, our sister company AquaTec Plumbing handles it.
What areas do you serve? +
We are based in Keswick and work about an hour out across York Region, Simcoe County and Durham Region: Keswick, Sutton and Georgina, East Gwillimbury, Holland Landing, Mount Albert, Newmarket, Aurora, Bradford, Innisfil, Beaverton and Brock, King City, Stouffville, Richmond Hill, Uxbridge, Port Perry, Barrie, Alliston, Orillia and Whitby.
