Water Softeners in Barrie: Check Your Zone First
Barrie has two very different waters. Groundwater zones are very hard. Lake Simcoe zones are much softer. Check your zone. If it is hard, we fix it. If it is not, we will tell you.
How hard is Barrie water? The official numbers
The City of Barrie runs a Surface Water Treatment Plant drawing from Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe, with membrane filtration, granular activated carbon and chlorination, plus 12 municipal groundwater wells treated with sodium silicate for iron and chlorinated (Well 5 uses UV). Which water you get depends on your Water Supply Zone, which the City lets you look up.
| Water system | mg/L as CaCO3 | Grains per gallon | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Groundwater (well) supply zones | Not published | 13 to 20 | Very hard |
| Lake Simcoe surface water zones | Not published | 3 to 8 (average) | Soft to hard |
Source: City of Barrie, drinking water treatment and distribution (ranges published by the City, no year stated). Also see City of Barrie 2025 Drinking Water System Annual Report. Ratings use Health Canada's hardness scale. Grains are US grains (mg/L divided by 17.1). The City publishes ranges in grains per gallon, not a single number, and its 2025 annual report lists no hardness value.

Barrie is the one town on our list where we cannot tell you your hardness from the town name. The City of Barrie supplies water two ways. A Surface Water Treatment Plant draws from Kempenfelt Bay and treats it with membrane filtration, granular activated carbon and chlorination. Twelve municipal groundwater wells supply the rest. The City puts the well zones at 13 to 20 grains per gallon, which is very hard. It puts the lake-fed zones at an average of 3 to 8 grains per gallon, which runs from soft to hard.
That is a big gap. At 18 grains you have crust on every tap and a water heater on borrowed time. At 4 grains you may barely notice. Same city, different street, different water.
So the first step in Barrie is not a sales call. It is your zone. The City lets you look up your Water Supply Zone. If you are on a well zone, your water is very hard, you already know it, and a water softener fixes it. If you are lake-fed and the water does not bother you, we will tell you that you may not need one.

- Well zones: softeners sized for 13 to 20 grains per gallon
- Lake-fed zones: an honest answer, including no
- Baseline and after readings at your tap
- Sodium-aware options: potassium chloride or an RO tap

On a well zone? Your water is very hard.
At 13 to 20 grains per gallon, a groundwater zone in Barrie is as hard as anything in York Region. Scale builds fast in tank and tankless heaters, dishwashers and fixtures. The City treats its wells with sodium silicate to keep iron in check, and that is about iron, not hardness. The hardness is still there when it reaches your tap. A water softener takes it out.
We size for your zone and your household and give you a fixed written price. On install day we read your hardness before we connect anything. That is your baseline, and it tells us where in the 13 to 20 range you sit. We program from that number, then read the same tap again. You see both readings. Our systems are Canadian-made, built in Barrie, so this one is close to home.
- Sized from your own baseline reading

On a lake zone? You might not need one.
If your zone is fed from Kempenfelt Bay, the City's average is 3 to 8 grains per gallon. The low end of that is soft. If your water is soft, we will tell you. Then we will tell you not to buy a softener. That is the honest answer.
If you are at the high end and the spots on the glasses still bother you, a small softener or a salt-free conditioner may be enough. For taste at the kitchen tap, reverse osmosis does more than a softener ever will. And if you are outside the city on a private well or a lake intake, skip all of this and book in-depth well water testing first.
- Honest answer when you do not need one
- Small units or conditioners at the high end
- Well and lake owners routed to well testing
Sodium: what the 2025 report says
The City's 2025 Drinking Water System Annual Report lists 12 wells, 3 in-ground storage facilities, 7 booster stations and 3 elevated towers. It also notes that sodium in raw water at some wells was over the 20 mg/L reporting level, and that additional sodium testing is required at six wells.
A salt-based softener adds a little more sodium to softened water. For most people that does not matter. If someone in the house is on a sodium-restricted diet, we run the softener on potassium chloride instead of salt, or put a reverse osmosis tap at the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking. Your call.
- Potassium chloride instead of salt
- RO drinking water tap

Before and after. That is the proof.
We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.
