PFAS & Pharmaceuticals Removal in York, Simcoe & Durham

PFAS, the so-called forever chemicals, and pharmaceutical residue are in trace amounts in many water supplies, and a standard filter does not reliably remove them. Reverse osmosis and specialty carbon do, at the kitchen tap.

Overview

The contaminants the standards are still catching up to

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS, come from non-stick coatings, firefighting foam, stain repellents and packaging, and they do not break down. Pharmaceutical residue, from medications passing through people and animals, reaches groundwater and surface water through septic systems and treated wastewater. Both are found at very low levels in supplies across Ontario, and Health Canada has been tightening its guidance on PFAS.

Neither is removed by a sediment filter, a softener or basic carbon. A reverse osmosis system rejects the large majority of PFAS compounds and most pharmaceutical residue at the membrane. Specialty activated carbon and ion exchange media designed for PFAS add a second barrier. We combine them at the kitchen tap, where you drink.

Because these are lab-only tests, we sample before and after so you are not taking our word for it.

  • Lab testing for a PFAS panel and common pharmaceutical markers
  • Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap as the primary barrier
  • PFAS-rated carbon or ion exchange pre- and post-filters
  • Fridge and ice maker fed from the treated line
  • Post-install lab retest to confirm reduction
  • Membrane and specialty media replacement on schedule

Local Conditions

Who is asking about PFAS, and why

Households on wells near former industrial sites, airports and firefighting training areas ask about PFAS most often. In York Region that includes properties around Bradford, King and the industrial edges of Newmarket and Richmond Hill. Rural wells downstream of septic systems are the usual reason for pharmaceutical concern. In Georgina, well owners around Pefferlaw and Udora can have a lab test for PFAS before deciding whether to treat.

On municipal supply in Newmarket, Keswick and Richmond Hill the levels reported are low, and the decision to treat is a personal one. We give you the test results and the options and let you decide.

Installation

Where a PFAS filter goes under the kitchen sink

The system is an under-sink reverse osmosis unit with a PFAS-rated carbon stage, delivering through its own faucet and optionally to the fridge. It is fitted the same way as any RO system, in the sink cabinet with a small tank. Filter changes are yearly and the membrane every few years. Lab samples are taken before install and again a few weeks after.

Common Questions

PFAS Removal Questions, Answered

What homeowners ask before booking.

Does a Brita or fridge filter remove PFAS? +
Not reliably. Some pitcher and fridge filters claim reduction of specific PFAS compounds under test conditions, but they are not designed for it and performance drops as the cartridge ages. Reverse osmosis is the technology with consistent results.
Are PFAS levels in York Region water dangerous? +
Reported levels in municipal supply are low. In 2024 Health Canada set a drinking water objective of 30 ng/L for the sum of 25 PFAS, as set out in the Health Canada PFAS objective. Whether to treat at home is a personal decision, and we give you the test result rather than a sales pitch.
Can you treat the whole house for PFAS? +
Whole-home PFAS treatment exists using large specialty carbon or ion exchange tanks, but it is expensive and the media needs careful disposal. For most households, treating the drinking water at the kitchen tap is the practical answer.
How do I know it is working? +
We take a lab sample before and after install. You get both reports. At each annual service we can retest if you want ongoing confirmation.
