UV Water Purification for Wells & Cottages in York, Simcoe & Durham

A positive bacteria result on a well or lake intake does not mean the water is lost. A correctly sized UV system disinfects every litre as it passes, without adding chlorine or changing the taste.

Overview

Chemical-free disinfection at the point of entry

Ultraviolet light at the right wavelength and dose damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses and protozoa so they cannot reproduce. Water flows through a stainless chamber around a UV lamp; nothing is added and nothing is removed. It is the standard treatment for private wells and surface water intakes in Ontario when bacteria are present or possible. Health Canada's maximum acceptable concentration for E. coli in drinking water is none detectable per 100 mL (see the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality summary table).

UV only works if the light can reach the organisms. Sediment, iron, hardness scale and tannins all shadow or coat the lamp sleeve, so a UV system almost always needs sediment filtration ahead of it and, on many wells, iron and hardness treatment too. That sequence is where most failed UV installs went wrong.

We size the unit to your peak flow so the dose holds when several fixtures run at once, and we fit systems with lamp monitoring so you know when output drops.

  • UV systems sized to household peak flow, not the minimum
  • Pre-filtration so the water is clear enough for UV to work
  • Lamp intensity monitoring and alarm on higher-end units
  • Annual lamp replacement and sleeve cleaning
  • Post-install bacteria testing to confirm the result
  • Cottage and seasonal shutdown and start-up service

Local Conditions

Wells and lake water in Georgina and York Region

Rural East Gwillimbury, King, Whitchurch-Stouffville the Georgina concessions and the countryside around Uxbridge and Port Perry are on private wells, and shallow or older dug wells in particular return positive coliform results after wet springs. UV is the usual fix once the well itself has been checked and tested properly.

Cottages and homes on Lake Simcoe intakes around Jackson's Point, Pefferlaw and Keswick shoreline need UV as a matter of course, with sediment filtration ahead of it because lake water carries algae and silt that vary with the season.

Installation

Where a UV system goes on a well line

The UV chamber mounts on the main line after every other stage, so it treats the finished water just before it reaches the house. It needs a standard outlet for the ballast. A sediment filter goes ahead of it as a minimum. Once a year the lamp is replaced and the quartz sleeve cleaned, which takes about twenty minutes. Units with a monitor show lamp output and sound an alarm if it falls.

Pricing

What affects the cost of uv water purification

  • Flow rating, which sets chamber and lamp size
  • Whether a monitored unit with alarm is wanted
  • Pre-filtration needed ahead of the UV, based on your test
  • Annual lamp and sleeve service, shown up front
  • Post-install lab bacteria test, included

We quote a fixed written price after the well test, for only the stages the results call for.

Job: water treatment, nothing else
A UV lamp behind a dirty sleeve is a nightlight, not a disinfection system. Pre-filtration and annual service are the whole point.
Our Process

How Our UV Water Purification Service Works

Test the whole well, explain the numbers, treat what is there, then verify it worked.

1

Test For Bacteria

Lab testing for total coliform and E. coli, plus the sediment, iron and hardness that decide pre-treatment.

2

Design The Sequence

Sediment, iron or softening as needed ahead of the UV so the water is clear enough to disinfect.

3

Install And Commission

Chamber, ballast and pre-filters on the main line, then a flush and a first lamp check.

4

Retest And Remind

A follow-up bacteria test confirms the result. We set the annual lamp reminder.

Common Questions

UV Water Purification Questions, Answered

What homeowners ask before booking.

Will UV change how my water tastes? +
No. UV adds nothing and removes nothing; it only inactivates organisms. Any taste or smell in the water is a job for carbon, iron or sulphur treatment ahead of the UV.
Can I just shock chlorinate the well instead? +
Shock chlorination clears a one-time contamination but does nothing about the next one. If a well tests positive more than once, the source is ongoing and continuous disinfection is the answer. We also recommend having the well cap and casing checked.
How often does the lamp need replacing? +
Once a year. UV lamps lose output well before they burn out, so a lamp that still glows after eighteen months may not be delivering a safe dose. Sleeve cleaning happens at the same time.
Does UV work on a cottage that is shut down over winter? +
Yes, with a proper shutdown and start-up. The chamber is drained for winter and the system restarted, flushed and tested in spring. We offer that as a seasonal service.
