Chlorine & Chloramine Removal in York, Simcoe & Durham

Municipal water is disinfected with chlorine or chloramine on the way to your house. It has done its job by the time it arrives. A whole-home carbon filter takes it back out before your shower, your kettle and your skin.

Overview

Carbon at the point of entry

Activated carbon adsorbs chlorine and the taste and odour compounds that come with it. Catalytic carbon goes further and breaks down chloramine, the more stable disinfectant some systems use, which ordinary carbon barely touches. Knowing which your municipality uses decides the media, so we check before specifying.

Whole-home carbon means every tap, the shower, the bath and the washing machine get dechlorinated water. People notice it most in the shower, where chlorine in the steam is what dries skin and hair, and in tea and coffee, which taste of the water they are made with.

For a small household a large cartridge is enough. For a busier house a backwashing carbon tank handles the flow with no cartridges to change, and lasts years before the media is replaced.

  • Standard activated carbon for chlorine, taste and odour
  • Catalytic carbon for chloramine where the municipality uses it
  • Cartridge systems for smaller homes, backwashing tanks for larger
  • Sized to peak flow so pressure holds
  • Combined with a softener on one bypass where both are needed
  • Media and cartridge replacement on any brand

Chlorine in Keswick, Sutton and York Region supply

Lake Simcoe supply in Keswick, Sutton, Innisfil and Beaverton is chlorinated with a seasonal lake taste on top, and Lake Ontario supply in Richmond Hill carries the strongest chlorine taste in our area. Newmarket and Aurora are chlorinated too, and hard on top of it. Across Georgina, Sutton and Jackson's Point taps get the same chlorinated Lake Simcoe supply as Keswick.

Lake Simcoe supply in Keswick and Sutton adds seasonal taste and odour from the lake itself, which carbon also handles. We confirm chlorine or chloramine at your tap so the carbon is the right type. If sediment or well water is part of the picture, whole home water filtration adds the stages that carbon alone does not cover.

Installation

Where a chlorine and chloramine filter goes on the main line

The carbon stage goes on the main line after the sediment filter and, if you have one, before or after the softener depending on the design. A cartridge version is a large housing you can see into; a tank version backwashes to drain every few days and needs an outlet. Either way there is a bypass so the house stays in water during service.

Common Questions

Chlorine & Chloramine Questions, Answered

What homeowners ask before booking.

Is chlorine in tap water harmful? +
At the levels in municipal supply it is regulated and considered safe to drink. Removing it is about taste, smell, skin and hair, and about not breathing it in shower steam. We treat it as a comfort upgrade, not a safety one, and say so.
What is the difference between chlorine and chloramine? +
Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, used by some utilities because it lasts longer in the pipes. It is harder to remove: standard carbon only partially reduces it, catalytic carbon breaks it down. We check which your supply uses.
Will a carbon filter soften my water? +
No. Carbon removes chlorine, taste and odour, not hardness. If scale is also a problem you need a softener, and the two are often installed together.
How long does the carbon last? +
A cartridge on municipal supply typically runs six to twelve months. A backwashing carbon tank runs several years before the media is replaced. We size the interval to your actual use.
