Well Water Treatment in York, Simcoe & Durham

A private well is your own water utility. Iron, sulphur, hardness, sediment and bacteria each need their own stage, and the order they go in decides whether the whole system works.

Overview

Well water is a sequence, not a single filter

Municipal water arrives already treated. Well water arrives as the aquifer delivers it, and in York Region that usually means hard, often with iron and manganese, sometimes with hydrogen sulphide, and on shallow or older wells the possibility of bacteria. There is no one filter for all of that. There is a sequence, and the sequence depends on the test. Health Canada's maximum acceptable concentration for E. coli in drinking water is none detectable per 100 mL (see the Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality summary table).

A typical rural design is a sediment filter, an oxidizing filter for iron and sulphur, a softener for hardness, and UV for disinfection, in that order. Put the softener before the iron filter and the iron fouls it. Put the UV before the sediment filter and the lamp is shadowed. Skip the test and you are guessing at every stage.

We test everything that matters on a well, design the sequence, size each stage to your flow, and retest afterwards. And we tell you when a problem is the well itself, such as a cracked casing or a failing cap, rather than something treatment can fix.

  • Full well water test: hardness, iron, manganese, sulphur, pH, TDS, bacteria, nitrates
  • Iron and sulphur filters that do not need chemicals
  • Softeners sized for hard well water
  • UV disinfection with proper pre-filtration
  • Sediment filtration for sand and silt from the well

Local Conditions

Wells in Georgina, East Gwillimbury and across York Region

Rural East Gwillimbury outside Sharon, Queensville and Mount Albert, King Township beyond King City, Nobleton and Schomberg, the Whitchurch concessions around Vandorf, Gormley and Ballantrae near Stouffville, and the Pefferlaw and Udora side of Georgina are largely on private wells.

The Holland Marsh edge near Bradford and Holland Landing adds nitrates and sometimes tannins to the list. Wells drilled into the Oak Ridges Moraine tend toward very hard water with iron; shallow dug wells nearer the lake are more likely to show bacteria after a wet spring. Further out, the countryside around Uxbridge, Port Perry and rural Brock in Durham, and around Alliston and rural Innisfil in Simcoe County, is well country too.

Installation

Where well water treatment goes after the pressure tank

Everything mounts after the pressure tank in the mechanical room or basement, in sequence along the wall. Backwashing iron filters and softeners each need a drain and an outlet; the UV needs an outlet. A bypass around the whole train lets the house run on raw water during service. It takes a day for a full system, and we leave you with a simple diagram of what each tank does.

Pricing

What affects the cost of well water treatment

  • How many stages your test calls for
  • Iron and sulphur levels, which set filter media and size
  • Hardness and household size, which set softener capacity
  • Whether UV is needed and at what flow
  • Drain and electrical availability where the pressure tank is
  • Media and lamp replacement over the life of the system, shown up front

We quote a fixed written price after the well test, for only the stages the results call for.

Job: water treatment, nothing else
On a well, the order of the stages matters as much as the stages themselves. The right parts in the wrong order still fail.
Our Process

How Our Well Water Treatment Service Works

Test the whole well, explain the numbers, treat what is there, then verify it worked.

1

Test The Whole Well

On-site chemistry plus lab bacteria and nitrates. We look at the well head and pressure tank too.

2

Design The Sequence

Sediment, iron and sulphur, softening, UV, in the order your water needs, sized to your flow.

3

Install After The Tank

A full treatment train with drains, bypass and outlets, fitted in a day.

4

Retest And Explain

A follow-up test confirms every stage is doing its job. You get a diagram and a service schedule.

Common Questions

Well Water Treatment Questions, Answered

What homeowners ask before booking.

What does a typical York Region well need? +
Most need a softener because the water is hard. Many also need an iron filter, and some of those need sulphur treatment too. A minority need UV, usually shallow or older dug wells. Very few need everything, which is why we test before we design.
My well water smells like rotten eggs. What is it? +
Hydrogen sulphide gas, produced by bacteria acting on sulphur in the aquifer. An oxidizing filter converts it to a solid it can trap. If the smell is only at the hot tap, the water heater anode may be the cause instead, and that is a different fix.
Is well water safe to drink? +
It is when tested and treated. Your local public health unit tests private wells for bacteria free of charge, and we test the chemistry. Between the two you know exactly what you have. Untested well water is the risk, not well water itself.
Do you fix wells and pumps? +
We treat the water. For well drilling, casing repair or pump replacement we work alongside licensed well contractors and will tell you when a problem is theirs rather than ours.
