Water Softeners in Port Perry, Greenbank and Blackstock

Lake view, well water. Port Perry sits on Lake Scugog, but the taps run on municipal wells, and so do Greenbank and Blackstock. All three are very hard.

How hard is Port Perry water? The official numbers

Port Perry sits on Lake Scugog, but its tap water comes from municipal groundwater wells. Greenbank and Blackstock have their own small municipal well systems. The rest of the Township of Scugog, including the island and the farm country, relies on private wells. Source: Region of Durham.

Local Water, Port Perry

Port Perry water: a lake town on well water

People assume Port Perry drinks Lake Scugog. It does not. The taps run on municipal groundwater wells, and groundwater here is very hard. Durham Region lists Port Perry at 274 mg/L, about 16.0 grains per gallon. Greenbank is 276, about 16.1. Blackstock is 316, about 18.5. Every one of them is well over the 180 very hard line.

Health Canada's hardness document describes water over 200 mg/L as poor, though people tolerate it. That matches what you see. Crust on the taps, cloudy glasses, scale flaking out of the shower head, and a water heater that does not last as long as it should.

Durham says its water is safe and that a softener is a personal preference. That is fair. Your water is safe. It is also very hard, and you already know it. A water softener sized for your system and household ends the scale, and we prove it with a hardness reading before and after install.

  • Softeners sized for 274 to 316 mg/L
  • Sizing for Port Perry, Greenbank or Blackstock, not a one-size guess
  • Baseline reading before install, after reading once it is running
  • Fixed written price
  • In-depth well water testing for Scugog Island and the farms

Town Water, Scugog

Three well systems, one problem

Port Perry, Greenbank and Blackstock are separate systems with separate wells, and the numbers are close but not the same. Blackstock is the hardest at 316 mg/L. We size from your system's number and your household: people, bathrooms, and whether you run a tankless heater. You get a fixed written price for one softener that fits.

Install day is simple. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your kitchen tap. That is your baseline. We install, program from that reading, then read the same tap again. You see both numbers. We do not ask you to take our word for it.

Wells, Scugog

Scugog Island and the farm country: wells, tested properly

Most of the Township of Scugog is outside those three systems, on private wells. A well is not town water. Nobody tests it but you. The Region's Health Department tests private wells for bacteria, and that is worth doing. It does not cover nitrates, sodium, iron, sulphur or metals, and on farm land nitrates matter.

For a well, book in-depth well water testing before any treatment. We test on site and through an Ontario laboratory, explain the results in plain language, then treat in order: sediment, iron and sulphur, softener, UV. If nitrates come back high, reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap is the drinking water answer. Cottages drawing from Lake Scugog itself need a lake water system, not a softener.

  • Bacteria, nitrates, iron and sulphur
  • Lake intake systems for Scugog cottages
  • Treatment only for what the test finds
How a softener install works in Port Perry

Before and after. That is the proof.

We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.

Common Questions

Hard water and softener questions in Port Perry

Is the water in Port Perry hard? +
Yes, very hard. Durham Region lists Port Perry at 274 mg/L, about 16.0 grains per gallon. Greenbank is 276 and Blackstock is 316. Health Canada's very hard line is 180.
Doesn't Port Perry get its water from Lake Scugog? +
No. The town sits on the lake, but its tap water comes from municipal groundwater wells. That is why it is so much harder than lake water.
Is Port Perry water safe? +
Yes. Durham says its water is safe and meets aesthetic guidelines. Hardness is a scale problem, not a health problem.
Do I need a softener? +
Durham calls it a personal preference, and that is true. At 274 mg/L, most people who are tired of scale on taps, glass and water heaters choose one. We size it and quote it in writing.
How will I know it is working? +
We read your hardness at the kitchen tap before we connect anything and again after install. You see both numbers.
I am on a well on Scugog Island. What do I do? +
Start with in-depth well water testing. A well can carry bacteria, nitrates, iron and sulphur that a softener will not touch. We test, explain, then treat what is there.
