Water Softeners in Holland Landing: Hard Water With Iron

Holland Landing water is hard and carries more iron than almost anywhere else in York Region. You already see it in the kettle and the water heater. We fix it with a softener set up for both, and show you the numbers.

On a well or lake intake: test it first

On a well by the river or the marsh? Hardness is the least of it. Nitrates, bacteria and tannins come first, so start with in-depth well water testing.

Holland Landing water: hard, with iron on top

York Region lists Holland Landing as Lake Ontario water blended with groundwater, and the Town's master plan references the Holland Landing and Queensville municipal wells. The latest York figure is 168 mg/L, about 9.8 grains per gallon. That is near the top of the hard band. One more step and it would be very hard.

Then there is the iron. York's table shows 0.460 mg/L for Holland Landing, one of the highest iron readings anywhere in the York system. York notes that iron in groundwater can discolour water, especially once it is heated in a hot water tank. If your hot water looks tinted or your tank flushes out rusty, that is why.

You already know this water is hard. What matters here is that the softener is set up for the iron as well as the hardness, because the water heater shows both first. We read your hardness before we connect anything, program from that reading, and read the same tap again after. You see both numbers.

The water is treated, monitored and safe. Hardness and iron are scale and staining problems, not health problems.

Municipal, Holland Landing

Softeners for hard water with iron

At 168 mg/L, about 9.8 grains per gallon with 0.460 mg/L of iron, Holland Landing water does two things to a house: it scales and it stains. Kettles crust, shower glass clouds, and the hot water tank collects both. A water softener set up for that water handles the hardness and takes out dissolved iron at the same time, as long as it is programmed for it.

That is why the install reading matters here more than most places. We read your hardness at the kitchen tap, set the softener from it, and read the same tap again after. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right. Sodium is lower than at Keswick, at 24.2 mg/L, but a reverse osmosis tap is still the answer for anyone on a sodium-restricted diet.

Many homes here pair the softener with a carbon stage on one bypass for chlorine. To see what else the municipal treatment leaves behind, read what is actually in York Region tap water.

Wells, Holland Landing

Well water near the river and the marsh

Rural East Gwillimbury outside the serviced areas is on private wells, according to the Town's master plan, and that includes properties around Holland Landing toward the river and the Holland Marsh. Those wells are a different job. Start with in-depth well water testing, because what matters most there is what you cannot see.

Near the marsh, nitrates are a lab test, not a guess. They have no taste or smell, they matter most for infants and pregnant women, and they come out reliably only with reverse osmosis at the drinking tap. Tannins near the wetlands need their own media, iron needs an iron filter, and a shallow well that tests positive for bacteria gets UV.

How a softener install works in Holland Landing

Before and after. That is the proof.

We do not ask you to take our word for it. Before we connect anything, we read the hardness at your tap. That is your baseline. We install, program the softener from that number, and read the same tap again. You see both readings. The after number tells you it works. It tells us it is set up right.

Common Questions

Hard water and softener questions in Holland Landing

Is the water in Holland Landing hard? +
Yes. York Region reports Holland Landing at 168 mg/L, about 9.8 grains per gallon (2026 Q2 average). That is near the top of Health Canada's hard band of 121 to 180 mg/L.
Why is my hot water slightly tinted? +
Iron. York's table shows 0.460 mg/L in Holland Landing, and York notes iron in groundwater can discolour water, especially once it is heated in a hot water tank. A softener programmed for it takes out dissolved iron along with the hardness.
Do I need a test before you quote? +
No. The official numbers are published. Your household and bathrooms are enough to size it, and we read your hardness at install, before and after, so you see the result.
Should I test my well for nitrates near the Holland Marsh? +
Yes, especially if anyone in the house is pregnant or under a year old. Only a lab test finds nitrates. That is part of our in-depth well water testing, and reverse osmosis removes them at the drinking tap.
Why is my well water brown? +
Near the marsh it is usually tannins from organic material, which stain and taste but do no harm. A tannin media stage removes them. Orange rather than brown points to iron instead. The test tells us which.
How far are you from Holland Landing? +
Close. We are based in Keswick, just up the road, and Holland Landing is on the way to most of our calls.
