How it works

What the system actually does

A softener swaps the calcium and magnesium that make water hard for sodium or potassium, by ion exchange in a resin tank. When the resin is used up the controller regenerates it with brine from the salt tank. Every Honest Water series regenerates on demand, from a meter that counts the water you actually used, rather than on a timer that runs whether you were home or not.

The difference between the series is in the valve, the controller and how much iron they will tolerate. The Premium and Ultimate use as little as 2.5 pounds of salt and 17 gallons of water per regeneration, which Honest Water rates at 80 percent less salt than a traditional softener. The Ultimate regenerates only the part of the resin bed that is exhausted and handles up to 10 ppm of clear-water iron. The Superior handles up to 5 ppm with a turbulator. The Chlor-A-Soft adds chlorine and chemical removal for municipal supply.

We pick the series from your hardness, your iron and your household. On town water that starts with your town's published number and a reading at install. On a well, it starts with a full well test. Hardness sets the capacity, iron sets the series, and your household sets the tank size. If your iron is above what a softener should see, an iron filter goes ahead of it.

We read your hardness before we install and again after, so you see the difference. Same kitchen tap, two numbers. The after reading tells you it works and tells us the softener is programmed right.

The honest part

What it will not do

Every system solves one set of problems. We would rather tell you the limits now than have you find them later.

  • Chlorine taste on well water (no chlorine to remove; a carbon stage is for municipal supply)
  • Iron above the series limit, which fouls resin; an iron filter goes first
  • Bacteria, nitrates, lead or PFAS, which are a UV or reverse osmosis job
  • Homes without a drain nearby for regeneration, where a salt-free conditioner may fit instead
Common questions

Water Softeners questions, answered

Which Honest Water softener is right for my home? +
On rural wells the Superior Series, because it tolerates up to 5 ppm of clear-water iron; on municipal supply the Premium Series, for the salt and water savings. We size either from your hardness and your household, not a rule of thumb, and we read your hardness before we install and again after, so you see the difference.
How much salt will it use? +
Honest Water rates the Premium and Ultimate at as little as 2.5 pounds of salt and 17 gallons of water per regeneration, and all series regenerate on demand from a meter. Potassium chloride works too.
What does the 20-year unlimited warranty cover? +
It is Honest Water's manufacturer warranty on the Premium, Ultimate and Chlor-A-Soft series. The Superior carries 12 years and the Value 7. We register every unit at install and handle any warranty claim for you.
Can it go in a cabinet? +
Yes. Every series is available in a cabinet design with an optional lid, which puts the resin and brine in one enclosure for a tight mechanical room or a finished basement.
