Iron & Sulphur Removal for Wells in York, Simcoe & Durham
Orange rings in the toilet, brown laundry, black slime in the tank, a sulphur smell that hits you at the tap. Iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide are the three most common well water complaints in York Region, and one filter often handles all three.
Oxidize it, then trap it
Dissolved iron and manganese are invisible in the glass until they meet air, which is why the staining shows up in toilets, tubs and laundry. Hydrogen sulphide is the gas behind the rotten-egg smell. All three respond to the same approach: oxidize them into a solid, then filter the solid out and backwash it to drain.
Modern air-injection and catalytic media filters do this without chlorine or other chemicals. A pocket of air in the top of the tank oxidizes the water as it passes, and the media traps the result. A daily backwash sends it to drain. Sizing depends on the levels of each, the pH, and your peak flow, all of which come from the well test.
Getting iron out first also protects everything downstream. A softener asked to handle more than a trace of iron fouls within a year or two; a UV lamp behind iron-stained water cannot see through it.
- Air-injection and catalytic media filters, no chemical feed
- Iron, manganese and hydrogen sulphide in one stage where levels allow
- pH correction where low pH stops oxidation working
- Sized to peak household flow so the filter does not bleed through
- Backwash to drain with proper air gap
- Media replacement and service on any brand

Where iron and sulphur show up in Georgina and York Region
Wells into the Oak Ridges Moraine through King, rural Aurora, Whitchurch-Stouffville and rural Richmond Hill are the classic hard-and-iron wells. Sulphur smell is common in the deeper drilled wells across East Gwillimbury and toward Georgina.
Iron bacteria, which leave a slimy orange or brown film in toilet tanks, are a separate issue that needs the well shocked before a filter will stay clean, and we check for them during the test.
Where an iron and sulphur filter goes on your well
The iron filter is the first backwashing tank after the pressure tank and sediment filter, ahead of the softener and UV. It needs a drain for the daily backwash and an outlet for the valve. You will hear it backwash for a few minutes, usually in the small hours. There is no salt and no chemical to add; the media lasts years and is replaced when it is spent.
What affects the cost of iron & sulphur filters
- Iron, manganese and sulphur levels, which set the media and tank size
- pH, which decides whether a correction stage is needed ahead
- Peak flow, which sets tank diameter
- Drain and outlet availability near the pressure tank
- Media life and replacement cost, shown up front
We quote a fixed written price after the well test, for only the stages the results call for.
Nobody needs to live with orange toilets. The filter that fixes it has no chemicals, no salt, and takes an afternoon to install.
How Our Iron & Sulphur Filters Service Works

Test Iron, Manganese, Sulphur And pH
The four numbers that decide the media and whether pH correction goes first.
Size The Filter
Tank and media chosen for your levels and peak flow, so it does not bleed through when the shower and washer run together.
Install After The Pressure Tank
First stage in the train, with backwash to drain and an outlet for the valve.
